I had a whole other career before I decided to become a journalist. I managed a technical writing department in a big software firm.

I made good money, had good hours. But there was one thing missing: job satisfaction.

I started to look back on things I enjoyed doing when I went to university. The work I did on some small university publications stood out in my mind.

I decided to take magazine courses, and I eventually enrolled in the 1-year journalism program at the University of King's College in Halifax. At the time, I figured I wanted to write for magazines, but I had to take a mix of courses. That's when I fell in love with radio. I enjoyed every aspect of the medium... writing, reporting, being on air.

When I graduated, I was lucky enough to be hired at CBC Radio Sudbury. That's where I am now.

It's still early on in my career, but I know I've made the right decision for myself. I still love what I do, and I love that my job is always changing. There is always a challenge, and most importantly, I finally get some job satisfaction, especially when I wake up in the morning and hear my voice on the radio telling a story of which I'm really proud.

What stories make me most proud? Unique stories that people decide to care about.

Do I have any advice about being a journalist? If that's what you want to do, don't let anyone tell you any differently. Go for it.
